If you haven’t used Airbnb yet, I highly recommend using it. I heard about the service from others so about a year ago when I traveled to New York City I decided to give it a try. Since then, I have used this service in Athens, Chania, Prague, Kuala Lumpur, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik. Airbnb allows you to rent out rooms or whole apartments in cities around the world. You can also use Airbnb for a travel budget template because you can save money booking with their service compared to hotels.
1- You are able to have great opportunities to interact with hosts
When I visited Athens last summer, I thought that I had the Airbnb taken care of. That is when I realized I made a mistake with the booking and booked for the next night. You can blame arriving that morning for my mistake. I met with my host and he told me “You have the apartment for tomorrow, but it is booked tonight.” Now, he didn’t have to offer to drive me around Athens to look for hotel rooms but he did. It was about midnight and we went to about five different hotels in the Acropolis area and were not able to find anything. He then mentioned he had another apartment that he doesn’t rent out on Airbnb and that we could stay there. I offered to pay him for it but he told me not to worry about it. The next morning he took us over to the room and checked us in. I was very grateful for his kindness and hospitality and know that if I were staying in a hotel this would not have happened.
2- You have more control about where you can stay
One of the features that I really enjoy about Airbnb is the location maps. You are able to pick what neighborhood you want to stay in along with criteria you would like in that apartment. Along with this feature you can contact the hosts in advance about availability and questions for that specific neighborhood. I’ve been able to find places to stay in good locations because of these features. When I was in Prague, I was able to find an Airbnb which was about a 5 minute walk to the Old Town and also a 10 minute walk to the nightlife areas in the Old Town. While I was in Chania, Greece my friend and me wanted to stay a bit further from the Old Town but closer to the beach. We were able to find a location that was convenient for the two of us along with a host who had wine and soaps in the apartment for us. It was a wonderful experience staying there and in Prague. I wouldn’t have found these great apartments if I didn’t use the Airbnb service.
3- Airbnb Will Not Hesitate to Help you out
In all of my Airbnb experiences, I only had one bad experience when I was staying in an apartment in Kuala Lumpur. The host mentioned WI-fi in the description and it worked very poorly. Along with that, the shower and toilet had problems. I had already booked the apartment for three nights so I decided to contact Airbnb. They were very understanding about the problem and offered to refund me the nights I stayed there. Airbnb also mentioned that they would look into this host about the problem so hopefully he received a warning to fix the issues with the apartment. If you do have any issues with the Airbnb you are in, let then know so they can help you out.
Obviously, there are some cons to Airbnb like if you are traveling solo and want to meet people. In that case, I would recommend staying in a hostel.
