Staying in hostels has been one of the best experiences I’ve had from traveling. I’ve met so many people and have gotten to explore awesome places with the people I’ve met from hostels.  Some of these friends I’ve met up in other cities like London. I feel like I meet like-minded people when I stay in them. Maybe it’s the fact that we share a similar mindset, which is travel!

1.  It’s great for solo travelers- Have you ever traveled alone and wondered how am I going to meet new people? Well, staying in a hostel is perfect if you are traveling solo because it’s great for meeting new people. While staying in hostels, I have met other people whom are traveling solo. We’ve linked up and done side trips together or gone out in evening for dinner or drinks. Hostels usually coordinate social functions so it’s easier to meet people in them. I remember I stayed at a hostel in Barcelona that would organize pub-crawls in the evenings. The name of the hostel is Sant Jordi Hostel. Some hostels even have a bar which are great for socializing and finding out what others are doing later on in the evening. I remember when I stayed at the Mad Monkey Hostel in Phnom Penh. It was great because they had a bar on the top floor then from there we would go out for the pub crawl in Phnom Penh.

2. Budget- If you are on a tight budget, hostels are great because you can always share a dorm.  This is especially true in Europe where accommodations are pricier. Even those with more of a spending budget can find a private room or smaller sized dorms. Personally, I prefer getting a private room because I like my space.  Also, private rooms tend to be decently priced in Southeast Asia. The average price for a private room in Chang Mai is $20 a night.

3.  Making international friends- One of the best parts of staying in hostels is that you get to meet people from all over the world. I’ve met people from many different countries and also met up with them when I visited their country. That is a truly great experience.

Now, you are probably wondering “Well how do I know if a hostel is good or not?” There’s a website I like to use called Hostelworld which lets you search by rating and budget. I highly recommend using this site since it helps guide you in the right direction of finding a place that fits your needs. I try to read through the ratings and find hostels that have good reviews for social atmosphere.  Also, try to leave reviews so you can help other travelers who are looking where to stay. I like to give honest reviews of accommodations I stay in that include the pros and cons of it.
